Well, Aston Villa’s victory over Fulham on Monday evening was incredibly welcome as we kept our unbeaten start to 2020/21 going for another match.

Many fans felt it was a must win match to show we had learned how to close out games against those expected to be around us in the table – a trick we didn’t really manage often enough last year – but we got slightly better than just that.

We dominated and had a comfortable 3-0 lead by the 50th minute with Jack Grealish, Conor Hourihane and Tyrone Mings getting on the scoresheet, but we weren’t perfect and still have plenty to improve upon. The hosts were more in it during the second period and had a goal scrubbed off by VAR, but we weren’t really troubled.

Statistics website Whoscored had fantastic player ratings after that performance – despite our poorer second half – and their star man award when to double assister John McGinn with a rating of 8.65.

Completing the top five best performers in their eyes were Conor Hourihane (8.51), Matty Cash (8.40), Jack Grealish (8.20) and Tyrone Mings (8.12).

Special mentions for Trezeguet, Ezri Konsa, Ollie Watkins and Emi Martinez who all received seven-plus scores.

Now for further improvement as we move forward – but few can argue Super John wasn’t more back to his best and long may that continue.
