Cardiff’s defeat to Derby last night means there is still a chance for us achieving automatic promotion.
There are a number of permutations that could see us snatch that crucial second place in the final two games, but it’s still a tall order. A lot of things will have to go our way.
On Twitter, supporters were considering all the possible scenarios which could see us get promoted on the final day:
2nd Place is still on. If we win at the weekend & Cardiff & Fulham both lose (or at least don’t win) then it goes to the last day. CAN YOU IMAGINE 😬 #AVFC

Stranger things happen but I can't see it myself. But just imagine last game of season if Fulham Cardiff lose next game and Villa win #avfc

Cardiff draw both games & finish on 88.
We win both games & finish on 88 & better goal difference.
Fulham draw v Sunderland & are leading 1-0 at The Sty. Up pops Craig Gardner in injury time to equalise & reveal an 'Up The Vile. SOTC' t shirt. Fulham drop to 87. We're up #AVFC— James (@gortavfc) April 24, 2018
To go up #AVFC need to beat whoever is in front of them so whether it’s Fulham or Cardiff let’s do it

Yeah it’s the Cardiff Reading game that I can’t see playing out as Reading have been on the beach since August…. The rest looks very feasible though #avfc

Verdict:
Essentially we would need both Cardiff and Fulham to fail to win any of their last two games to really have a good chance. It goes without saying that two wins from two for us is critical for any chance of an automatic place.
Still, stranger things have happened than two teams buckling under pressure when it matters most, but I’m certainly not going to be holding out for that happening.
With both Derby and Millwall still fighting for playoff places, we will have a job on our hands doing our part and getting six points anyway. We will just have to see where we end up.
