Vital Villa asked, in a poll suggested by Lee Lindsay, what type of player do Villa need to buy in the January transfer window?

62% said a striker.

22% an attacking midfielder/winger.

7% said a full back

3% said a full back despite the fact we have Olof Mellberg, Gary Cahill, Liam Ridgewell and when fit Mark Delaney and Martin Laursen.

3% said we needed a new keeper.

Our latest poll, suggested by Christo asks if Gary Cahill should be tried up front! The strikers should certainly watch what he does and try the same, you never know, in that case they might actually SHOOT!

  • No offence Christo but I take it your suggestion for Cahill up front is tongue in cheek? We have a player who looks like he could be our answer to John Terry and you want to start playing him out of position? Not in a million years! Maybe he could just teach Baros and Angel to shoot in training instead?

  • He’s Definately one for the future, loves to get forward and has wicked shot and seems very clam despite being only 20 odd……He’s handled himself very well over the past 2 weeks against 2 of the strongest high ball merchants going

  • We need a wingers more than strkers….we have 5 strikers and only 1 winger in Barry (Gabby has been covering on the right and causes much more trouble up front). Im sure MON will go straight after some pace and crossing ablility for both wings in Jan.

  • It came to my mind the way he shoots and stuff that maybe he should be given a chance up front he may turn out to be the next Alan Shearer or he may suck you all decide. I may be wrong maybe he wont do well

  • Cahill is going to be a wondeful player. Like Deano says, he could be our answer to John Terry. Defensively he is excellent, he reads the game well, strong in the air, good with the ball at his feet and knows where the goal is. He is too much of an asset in defence to think about putting him up front. What is all this square pegs in round holes nonesense

  • I think we need a striker AND a creative, attacking midfield player. No good buying a striker without some quality in midfield to get the ball to them.

  • was it paul warhurst for sheff wed? he was a defender who moved upfront and then, if i recall, won an england cap as a striker

  • I thought we had already sorted out that Ridgewell was going to be our next player to go upfront…….hang on a minute…….maybe it could be a new striking partnership! I think this whole discussion goes to show how much we are crying out for a striker of some quality to give us the 20 goals plus per season. Its been a long time (Angels one off aside).

  • I’m off ill so please excuse some of the striking suggestions I’m about to make…
    a) Lets go nick a M’Boro player for a change…YAKUBU
    b) Take a punt on BEATTIE
    c) Long shots are DEFOE or KEANE – both quality and better than what we have (Agbonlahor still for the future and quality)
    d) GEREMI
    e) Wayne BRIDGE
Sorry for going off the striker tangent Deano,…

  • my problem with needing a striker is that our midfield I don’t think supply the right balls to the players up front anyway. For instance (and I know he does sod all else etc etc) Baros needs the ball played to his feet, he needs through balls. Angel often gets the ball hit at him whilst he has the back to the defence so he has little chance, we don’t go to the wing and cross it, especially not to the bye line, and the more direct approach doesn’t work with little strikers. That said, I can’t understand why they aren’t feeding off the flicks from Sutton. In a roundabout way, what I’m saying is we need a playmaker and/or winger to get the ball to the strikers whether new or old, then we might start seeing goals by the front men.

  • Remember the Portsmouth first goal. Davis on the left plays a curling pass in front of the defence for Gabby to run onto. Gets there before James and gets the pen. That’s the ball wingers can play for the strikers to get onto. What a threat Gabby is on the break at away games. Methinks MON likes his big forward to hold the ball up and a speed merchant to play off him. A good right winger (SWP & Milner) and Gabby up front??

  • Agree with fear and gazvilla. He bought Petrov to do the playmaking so I reckon he will need at least one winger to support any new strikers.

  • You lot are gonna hate me for this but i’m still doped up on Beechams and Lucozade: How about we buy Lee Trundle?…he has a pop at goal and can pass a ball. And for my sane suggestions: Routledge from Tottenham must be chomping at the bit as well. Don’t think SWP or Milner will come but would love either….how about this Cooke from QPR or was that just ex-Villa boss media hype…..? Gabs ace but even he would admit that too much is expected of him and he could do with some experienced guys alongside him – or else he’ll burn out and we’ll take the fun out of it for him.
