Martin O’Neill is trying to avoid the ‘R’ word but knows a loss tonight would put us in the sort of action none of us want to think about.

The Villa boss said: ‘I still believe we are capable of winning three consecutive games. It takes some doing, but we can do it. But as I’m saying those words, they sound a bit empty at the moment. The supporters were well aware of the strengths and weaknesses and wouldn’t have been fooled by a couple of decent results at the start of the season. They have had a moan – we had a taste of it against Liverpool – but we deserved it. We surrendered territory in the game and never got it back.’

‘If it goes against us, you will be asking: ‘Are you looking over your shoulders?’ But if we win tonight it will set us up for the season.’

The faith is still high, we asked in our usual pre-match poll what you thought the result would be. 64% predicted a Villa win, 16% said another draw and 20% said we’d lose.

COME ON THE VILLA. Right, where are my lucky pants, I’m off down Villa Park.
