James Collins, with the help of the clubs medical staff, has identified the cause of his pre season fitness woes.

Speaking on the Official Site ahead of our clash against Spurs, Collins talked about the calf problems he had in pre season, that also kept him from first team contention as the season started.

Apparently it’s not the first time Collins has had a bout of calf trouble, as he suffered similar whilst at Wet Spam – but what nobody had done was made the connection to him changing his boots.

With one type of boot he had bouts of calf problems, yet with another everything was tickety boot.

‘It was my calves, I’ve struggled with them for a while but I’ve found out that it was because of my boots so I’ve changed them.’

Collins was quick to praise the eagle eyed physio for the spot, and added.

‘The physio just mentioned ‘what sort of boot is it?’ I’ve changed back and everything has been fine, I’m wearing the same make, but just a different style.’

So there we go, certainly wouldn’t have been my first (let alone my last) guess for why he was crocked – but that’s probably why I’m not on the medical team at the club and tasked with working such things out.

We’ve definitely benefited from his return to fitness, as his form of late has been rather good indeed. Collins though shrugs off the praise insisting that stopping the opposition from scoring is what he’s paid to do, but there’s certainly nothing better for a fan than seeing a player prepared to put their bodies on the line in tackles…or maybe that’s just the sadist in me?

‘That’s what we’re all here to do. We’re paid to stop goals going in, we’re paid to be defenders.’

Collins adds that all the defenders at the club have a similar attitude and style of play and he acknowledges that a good, hard tackle (but fair) definitely gets the crowd going which helps in the players by adding.

‘We all chuck our bodies on the line and win our headers. That’s what we do. The fans see us doing that and it gives them a lift and they get behind us.’

More of the same against Spurs I hope!
