Villan57 returns with his player ratings, this time in the disappointing draw v Preston North End.

From our match thread: Click Here…

Well, that was a letdown with so many fans making the trip to Preston expecting a win, me included. Struggling to pick a decent performer but here goes.

Nyland: 5 One great save but jittery and hesitant as ever for me, just one more game and he’s gone thankfully.

Elmo:4 Awful for most of the game, can’t believe how poor he’s been lately.

Bree: 5 Being generous here. He is slow Shaky and gives me the frights.

Chester: 6 Probably the best of our pedestrian back four.

Hutton: 5 All over the place and some of his defending was last-ditch desperation stuff.

Whelan: 6 Probably our best player and that really says it all, 3 games in a week was asking far too much of him.

Hourihane; 4 Weak, poor passing and when he doesn’t score he’s the weakness, feeble.

McGinn: 6 Gives it his best every game but today he wasn’t at it, missed another sitter.

El Ghazi:5 Flattered to deceive but looked better at the end when he was switched to the left wing.

Tammy: 6 Good header for the goal but his hold up play was sloppy.

Bolasie: 4 How did he start never mind stay on so long awful.

Subs:

Albert and Barney: 6 Thought we looked far more in control with these two on and only Dean Smith will know why they never started.

Coach

Smith:6 Come on Deano this isn’t working

  • Good morning J. I’m sorry to say that in the light of news I’ve only just become aware of – that Chester is carrying an injury – and the general unavailability of good defenders – I feel that your criticisms are harsh. Particularly against Elmo, who I see as more of a wing-back rather than being a pure defender. Yes, I know he’s erred, but he’s also provided good goal chances for others. More particularly that in the company of other uncertain units in the defence his own game has probably suffered. And, indeed, the rest of the team as well, as the back lot can’t be filling the team with confidence.

Metaphorically I feel as though we’re currently at the bottom of a valley but that the mountain climb we have in the rest of the season does not have an impossible path to traverse. Given the return of Elphick and a couple of other new insertions in the team, and maybe Albert and Codger coming back, I’m living in hope we’ll have a good second half of the season. Jack is due back in 3 games time, I believe.

  • The ratings pretty much sum up our performance at Preston, and for most of the season tbh. Fact is there are just too many sub-standard players still pulling on the shirt. We are behind Blues in the table, amongst others, and deservedly so!
Smith hasn’t organised the defence any better than his predecessor did, even allowing for Chester being ‘slightly’ injured we have been awful all season. Too many loan players who will just leave after season end.
Can’t see us finishing any higher than we are at the moment. Other teams are fitter faster, and frankly better all round.
