An interesting interview with our former CEO Tom Fox. I know these were the nightmare years, but a worthy listen anyway. Very clear he knows his stuff when it comes to being a commercial man, a marketing man, as was his background. However, what on earth were they thinking bringing him to Aston Villa, a massive club, with absolutely no experience of being in charge of a football club?
Tom admits himself, he had no, or little, experience, in doing this and knew it was a risk.
Some of his ideas it is hard to argue with, forming proper relationships between the different levels at the club, and he does admit they didn’t get all that right. However, it does seem the view is about it really being a ‘product’ as opposed to what we see it as, a football club.
To say “we didn’t quite get it right” is an understatement really, we got relegated.
I did meet him a few times and to be fair, he was a very nice, engaging guy, but no one will look back with any fondness, him included I am quite sure, bearing in mind we were ever presents in the Premier League and it was during that time, we lost that status.
