It wouldn’t be a transfer window these days if Aston Villa weren’t linked with a couple of Brentford players, and this weeks gambit on the rumour mill is left back Rico Henry.

The original report here seems to stem from the Daily Mail and whilst on one hand you can imagine head coach Dean Smith would like to reunite with him given his comments about the player in the past, it also makes it quite a lazy link as a follow on to the Said Benrahma and Ollie Watkins speculation.

Having worked with the 23-year-old at both Walsall and Brentford, Henry was in good form last season as they lost out on promotion at the Play Off stage, but if there is anything in this, you would imagine Neil Taylor’s time at B6 would come to an end.

Speaking to the BBC back in 2015, Smith said Henry.

“I can honestly say there was never any risk in my mind with Rico. He was 16 when I threw him in against Leeds in a pre-season friendly. And he’s a quick learner. You give him a bit of information and he takes it on board. If I were to liken him to anyone it would be a young Ashley Cole. And it’s up to him how far he can now go in the game. I’ve recommended him a couple of times to the England Under-19s because, if there’s a better left-sided player in the country at 18 years of age, I’d like to see them. That’s probably me being a little bit biased because I know the kid and what he has to offer. He’s got a great desire and a will to win. His attitude and application to everything he does is spot on.”

Henry has been linked with a number of clubs the last few weeks, so I think it’s probably more of a case that it’s ‘just our turn’ now – we know from last summer the club played its cards close to its chest so there’s no way we’d be leaking info this summer.
