Aaron Hughes is determined to fight to regain his place in the Villa team after being sidelined since the loan arrival of Phil Bardsley from Manchester United in January.

The 27-year-old right-back has been on international action with Northern Ireland along with fellow Villa team-mate Steven Davis, who this weekend was linked to a £2million move to Reading. The Villa duo will face another Villa player, Olof Mellberg, on Wednesday as NI take on Sweden.

Hughes said: ‘It’s great for me to be with the international squad again because it means a couple of games. I haven’t been playing at Villa lately which is disappointing but all I can do is keep my head down, train hard and hope a chance comes along before the end of the season.’

A summer exit? He was linked to a return to Newcastle United during the last transfer window and although he might not set the world alight, he is a versatile player who can fill any of the defensive spots from left to right. Can’t see him, along with a few others, being happy to not even make the match day squad, let alone not making the starting eleven for very long.
