Oh no please…

James Nursey of The Mirror has backed up a number of texts that I (and others) got last night saying that Alan Curbishley has had talks with Villa.

Seriously?

Apparently CEO Paul Faulkner and Randy Lerner spent some time over the last week in London interviewing potential candidates. All well and good there, they are – in my opinion – doing things right in interviewing and consulting with people in the game etc to bring us the right man. The next manager has big boots to fill, especially in the eyes of the very loyal Martin O’Neill backers … some fans really did rate this man as the best that Villa have ever had (and I’m not criticising or adding commentary here please note!) so the next manager has a great deal to live up to.

Surely Curbs isn’t that man?

Remember Curbs (now 52) played for Villa in 83/84 but also criticised Villa in favour of the Blues. Now to me it doesn’t really register as that was as a player and sometimes things are said off the cuff and not really that ‘serious’ however fans have long memories and already I’ve seen plenty in the forums about that!

Curbs has been out of work since departing from West Ham TWO YEARS ago. TWO YEARS out of work? Does that say something? He did save West Ham from relegation and only left when players were sold without his say so. As for Charlton, establishing them as PL regulars was nothing short of amazing really. That can’t be dismissed out of hand can it?

He did however do a fantastic job at Charlton, look what happened to them once Curbishley left.

The other problem with some of the names like Curbishley is the conspiracy theory as mentioned in our and I’m sure other forums is that … why not get him in before (or other names out of work) … the conspiracy says that they could have got them in straight away (or within a shorter time) in order to bring in players.

Now I don’t back that theory, I think the board have done things the right way in taking their time to make such a massive decision and to possibly assess how Big Mac did. However that won’t stop the theory being bandied about and perception is important for fans.

A big name like Ronald Koeman or whoever (I’m not great at who is available, who would be good, thank goodness it isn’t my job!) would surely be a far better signal of intent?

James Nursey names Gianfranco Zola, Gerard Houllier, Sven Goran Eriksson and Gareth Southgate as others who would like the job and have Premier League experience.

OK, he’s not done that well yet in management but I’d take Zola out of that lot!

Curbishley told a Mirrorfootball podcast earlier this summer ‘Anyone would be interested and I am, for sure. They are a massive club. I know a lot about them having played there and I would love it.’

Vital user HH2 said via text to me: ‘He did great with Charlton on a shoestring. Is this a sign of things to come? What about when he had money to spend at West Ham? Not so good was it? He wasted a lot on the likes of Ljunberg and Dyer.’

Adding… and I agree… ‘Martin O’Neill leaving is a huge opportunity for this club to appoint a progressive technical boss who can really move us on. Curbs is not that man.’

Gerrard Houllier seems to be failing his Vital Villa interview as well! Click Here

Therein lies the problem. We are NEVER all going to be satisfied. Whoever comes in will get our support though surely? Just not convinced that Curbs would be the man to unite the club, players and fans.

Not sure how this will go down but…. Alex McLeish? Very difficult move across the City however reports today in The Daily Mail say that the former Rangers boss has fallen out with the new board of Blues. He apparently wants a rise from £750k a year to £1m. He moved Blues up to 9th last season with a very small budget.

? I wonder!

So… article comments. Zola? AM I MAD?! Just such a MASSIVE figure in the game, such a star player… but a gamble fair enough!
Alex McLeish? yes or no?
And Curbs?
