According to Shaun Custis of The Sun are battling to sign Manchester United striker Alan Smith in January.

To be fair we mentioned this link on October 31st as did many others, but Custis is one of the main football reporters so hopefully there is some substance.

Alan Smith Linked To Villa

The report has no quotes or direct information as to where the link has come from but does say O’Neill is keen to take the 26-year-old former England and Leeds striker to boost Villa’s European credentials.

Middlesbrough, Newcastle and Everton are also interested, as are Championship clubs Cardiff, Leeds, Sunderland, Ipswich and Birmingham have also made enquiries.

Our latest poll asks if you would like Alan Smith at Villa. I’d love him if he has full recovered from his broken ankle, the man is a nasty snarling sort of player, the sort that gets stuck in and winds up the opponents. It has been a long time since we’ve had that sort and we desperately need some spice!

  • You boys are 4th and playing well, why bring in a player that will WANT 1st team football and dirupt what you’ve got! AND where would you play him, midfield or Striker!?

  • Had to laugh at Cardiff’s attempts at signing him though! As if he’ll drop down a division instead of joining another Prem club as its obvious some will want to loan him.

  • striker Baldyyid and to be honest, Baros isn’t doing the business and we need a bit of aggression up front. Him and Sutton would be a mean pair!

  • I just dont think Smith is very good. He’s certainly not a 20 goals a season man which is what we are craving.

  • I think he carries too much bagage with enjuries, I like his gritty determination but he is too mouthy (instead of getting on with the game he spends too much time mouthing of at the ref, if the decission does not go his way) a bit like Robbie Keane

  • Not convinced this would be a good deal. Does not impress with United. Ok so he can snarl So what? What use is that of he is a restricted player – had enough of those in the past.

  • I think whatever M’ON wants is OK by me. I believe we have a manager with who we can have total confidence. No doubt he will make some mistakes, but then again who doesn’t? If MON wants him, who are we to disagree? UTV

  • He is a class act – just needs match experience. It wasnt long ago he was the most exciting prospect in the England squad. He needs to leave Man Utd to play football and gain any recalls to International level. I think he’s just what we need to compete wi

  • I think MON has already proved he can get the best out of most players so why not add him if he is cheap enough

  • Would be a great addition to the squad. To think he could step in to cover McCann when suspended, like Sunday. Not convinced he’s a proven goal-scorer if used in that position but would be great as a target man with a nippy striker running off him, perh

  • I’m all for getting him. A proven premiership talent having performed at the highest level. We’d obviously face huge competition for his signature, but the pro’s far outweigh the cons. Think it would be a great signing.

  • Absolute class player. If anyone can get him back to what he was 3 years ago it’s Martin O’neill. This guy will score shed loads!!!

  • It can’t be true – Smith never played for Celtic – Ha Ha Ha – Only Joking, although not sure myself bout this – A fully fit Smith would certainly add much needed bite .. However if not fully fit, well that would be my worry!!!
