It’s now been confirmed that young Aston Villa midfielder Jordan Lyden has again suffered an injury, just days after returning to the club following the expiry of his loan deal with Oldham Athletic.

The 22-year-old Australian impressed many fans when he got his first team breakthrough purely based on his determination but after a succession of injuries, he got himself fit over the summer and made a late August switch out to Boundary Park to get his game time and experience up, and by all accounts he’s done well.

14 appearances in total as we moved into January also saw him score his maiden professional goal and whether his loan naturally came to an end, or he was specifically brought back by head coach Dean Smith so he could take a closer look at him, going down with another injury now can’t be described as anything but a blow.

Whilst we don’t have specifics, the Birmingham Mail describe it as being ‘a serious’ muscle related injury and the indication is it will involve another lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Lyden is out of contract next summer and he’d spoken recently of doing all he could to impress to get himself a new deal.

Can but hope it’s not quite as serious as it sounds.
