Are Villa Aiming Too Low?

There were rumblings a few days ago that Villa were going to table a bid for Tom Huddleston to rescue from the Championship. There is no doubting that, on occasion, Huddlestone can be a decent player, but are Villa still exhibiting a lack of ambition?

Of course, Lerner is looking to sell the club, and fans can only hope that this is still happening because the club has been very tight-lipped about it.

However, should Lerner not be planning for the possibility that he can`t sell the club? Until the deeds are handed over, the club still belongs to him and surely there cannot be another gamble that relegation can be avoided again.

Villa have painfully flirted with Championship football for years now, and every year it seems to be our year to drop. So, should Randy not be putting some money into the club to show that it`s an appealing club to any potential buyers? Perhaps he hasn`t accounted for the fact that if Villa doesn`t sell to another owner this season, a better faring in the league would increase the value of the club.

Huddlestone and Richards are good players, but are they at the level that Villa should be aiming for? Without being rude, these are players that have been good and are now a bit out of fashion. They could be winners, but they are far from current hot property.

The uncertainty of management and ownership has already likely to have alienated Cleverley, Vlaar and, potentially, Benteke, so it begs the question of why Lerner is pursuing the same path.

Perhaps he knows that the sale of the club is a certainty, or that he simply doesn`t care if Villa do get relegated. His appearance at the FA Cup seemed more of a kick in the teeth than a show of solidarity; a chance to sit next to the future King (who seemed genuinely more disappointed at the result than the owner did).

So, what do Villa fans think? Should Villa be aiming to acquire better players in spite of the sale, or should we be bargain basement shopping until the new owners are in?
