Villa have seen three players get a call up to the full England squad for the qualifying games against Estonia and Russia.

The England boss, Steve McClaren, was at Villa yesterday and was able to witness a scintillating first half display from Ashley Young and a real captain’s performance from Gareth Barry. Also in the squad is Scott Carson who surely has to be pushing for a go after another hapless display from Paul Robinson (against Villa) last Monday night. You surely can’t drop balls and miss crosses the way he has been and expect to remain England Number 1? Even one of my mates, a Spurs fan, says Robinson has become a liability!

Martin O’Neill said of the call up for Young – who looks a bargain buy now, following many raised eyebrows at the cost of the player when he was bought from Watford last January,

‘Ashley was mesmeric and unplayable at times. He was a great outlet for us and caused havoc. There were moments in the game when he was unplayable. The confidence he has got comes from having great ability. I’m sure it would be a nerve wracking experience for him to play, but I would obviously have no qualms with him going to play there. Gareth Barry took his chance splendidly and Young has the confidence and ability to go with it. He really is in top form at the moment.’

Villa had 8 English players line up yesterday including a clutch of England U21’s.
