According to Calciomercato, Aston Villa have been given a major boost in their pursuit of Gary Cahill, with the central defender ‘thinking of leaving’ Chelsea and ‘not sure’ about moving abroad, amid AC Milan interest.

The England international has been short of playing time under Maurizio Sarri this season and may have to leave Stamford Bridge in pursuit of playing time. A January move is expected, potentially on loan, and Villa are one of many clubs keen to procure his signature.

Cahill made 30 appearances for the Midlands outfit between 2004 and 2008 and remains a fan-favourite after his overhead kick against Birmingham City in 2006. He would provide much-needed experience to the backline, with Dean Smith forced to over-rely on James Chester and Axel Tuanzebe this season.

James Collins was signed on a short-term deal but he’s yet to be passed fit enough to feature. With Chelsea happy to sanction a loan deal for the centre-back, offers should come flooding in next month. Premier League sides might have an advantage in negotiations, but if Villa promise Cahill a starting place that might convince him to drop down a division.
