Aston Villa, The Gift That Keeps On Giving In – Match Stats

|

After another dull and boring interruption break, proper football was back up and running this weekend as Aston Villa welcomed ‘gap’ rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers to Villa Park.

Head coach Dean Smith made a few changes for this one, but after another fudge to avoid the chaos of the last break, Emi Martinez and Douglas Luiz immediately returned to the starting XI.

It wasn’t a great start and we were clearly worried about Traore’s pace, and faffing around at the back almost cost us, but 20 minutes in Meatball had had the best chance and we were unlucky to not be ahead.

The next best chance came to us as well and Danny Ings will be kicking himself at wasting that chance. But Wolves were still a threat and after a (say it quietly) great run from Traore we had Emi to thank as he saved well.

Wolves worked their way on top as the half came to a close but without really testing Emi1 and Matty Cash should’ve scored with his effort as well.

Balanced as we entered the break in reality, even if we had created more overall – but moments aside and little passages of play that showed flashes, we were poor again.

So, the second half. Meatball uses his backside on the right wing, sends the ball in and Danny Ings pops up with a sweet little header to make it 1-0.

48 minutes – game properly on.

It wasn’t ‘all us’ then, but Ollie really should’ve done better as he worked himself into the box, but momentum was now with us. Until it wasn’t and it was almost ‘all’ Wolves but they couldn’t do anything with it and we still had the next best chance but Matty Cash skied it.

With a little over 20 minutes remaining, Ollie capitalised on a loose ball but saw his effort blocked and the ball gently rolled toward our Super Meatball and he absolutely rifled it into the bottom corner.

2-0.

With ten to go, Wolves did capitalise on their next spell, although Saiss looked off for me. 2-1 and a nervy ending was in store.

Would we pay for sitting back at 2-0 – yes, you knew we would.

Another absolute shambles in the box from a corner saw Wolves hit the bar before making it 2-2 as the ball bounced off Conor Coady.

Then deep into stoppage time Wolves had the winner as Neves’ freekick deflected off Matt Targett, totally wrong footing Emi1.

3-2 final score – everyone back in training tomorrow, that was an absolute shambles and totally self inflicted.

Possibly only John McGinn can hold his head high after that.

  • Peter says:

Sorry to say this but think a new more tactically aware Head Coach is needed These sort of displays are becoming too common

  • Colin says:

I have to agree with Peter, I’m not normally a manager basher but poor tactics on his behalf lost us this game and It just isn’t good enough and is not acceptable.
