Aston Villa have been linked with a £10m move for Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Adam Reach, with Dean Smith desperate for more creativity in the squad. The Midlands outfit have struggled for form in recent weeks – picking up just one win in their last seven in all competitions – so some fresh faces may be needed.

Goals have been hard to come by of late too, with Villa scoring one or less in three of their last four outings, and Jack Grealish’s injury may be partly the cause. Conor Hourihane hasn’t managed to step up in the playmaker’s absence and Smith may feel he needs to dip into the transfer market to rectify the situation.

Reach is regarded as a left-sided midfielder, but he’s operated in a central role for Wednesday this season. The 25-year-old has scored and created nine goals in 25 league games, in addition to making 23 successful dribbles and creating 42 chances. His arrival might be down to the uncertain futures of existing players, however.

Grealish has been linked with a move away from Villa for some time. He might be considering a change in scenery if the Midlands club miss out on promotion for a third consecutive campaign. Hourihane may not be sold this month or next summer, but his place in the side could be up for grabs due to his poor form. Reach wouldn’t be a bad replacement for either player.

  • Adam Reach does look a good target, but I am sure we would have to sell to acquire.

Hourihane’s goals often cover up for his performances. In all honesty, I don’t think he’s a number 10, but probably lacks the grit to be a number 6, so is he competing with McGinn? If so, there is only one winner and he ain’t Irish.

I realise I will get in hot water for suggesting Grealish has failings, but they are there. Too few goals and assists for a player in an advanced role. He had to improve, but I have my doubts he will.

The funds would be more likely realised from selling the floppy haired one, but would Smith really want to upset the Holt End?

  • I feel Grealish upsets the opposition even if he doesn’t score, he creates panic. I don’t know much about Adam Reach, but if we rely on Tammy completely, at the end of the season he’ll go back to Chelsea or get sold to a Prem outfit. Even if we get promoted, I don’t think we can afford him. So we have to get another classy forward or we just won’t progress.

We’ve been lucky to date as Tammy never gets injured. If he does, it doesn’t look like Scot Hogan is the answer. TBH I had more faith in Gabby! I always put Hogan on the same level as McComack. Nothing to choose between them. So if the one isn’t good enough, neither is the other. I’d be happy to be proved wrong.

  • Adam reach would be a cracking signing but with cabbage Bruce in charge now really can’t see that happening.
Obviously they will need to sell a couple of players and they desperately need to get rid of some dead wood and the players who are just there for a free ride.
Has anyone got any idea of the transfer kitty that Dean Smith would be getting for this transfer window please
