Au Revoir

Looks like Aston Villa might be about to say au revoir to forgotten man Mathieu Berson.

It appears the on loan midfielder could be in line for a permanent switch to Auxerre in the summer. Berson, who joined Villa in August 2004, is currently on loan with the French club following a short lived and disappointing Villa career.

Berson was chased for months by David O’Leary with a host of other clubs also trying to get his signature. But once we got his signature, the player failed to break through to the first team regularly and O’Leary suggested the midfielder was finding it hard to settle in a big city having moved from a small village. A suggestion that the player himself strenuously denied.

The former France U21 international still has a couple of years left on his Villa contract said:

He said:’ I don’t think that the bosses would keep me if I had any offers. It would be in the interests of everybody.’

I could now go into a rant about why we buy players and then don’t use them, but what would be the point? You only have to think of the likes of David Ginola who we bought from Tottenham then benched, Berson and Eric Djemba Djemba who has had a public fall out with the club for the lack of opportunities to realise there is something very amiss at this club!

In the case of the Djemba twins, you can’t really see why such an average player was bought anyway, but with Berson it is a mystery because every time he did play for Villa he looked a top quality midfielder. Maybe Jumper Jumper is right, maybe O’Leary doesn’t understand French speaking players?! 😉
