Patrik Berger says he would love to take an extended contract at Aston Villa.

The former Czech Republic midfielder said:

‘If Villa offered me a new contract, I would be happy. I love it here and also for the family reasons it would be the best option for me to stay here. I don’t really have that many years ahead but there are older guys than me playing in the Premier League. I don’t see a reason why I can’t do that.’

Berger has played several cameo roles this season, the latest being the second half against Everton where he once again changed the shape of the game. He also had a period in ‘exile’ at Stoke after refusing to play in the reserves but after making up with Martin O’Neill it looks like the playmaker might well have put himself in contention for an extension to his contract which runs out at the end of the season.

Berger has also been linked to a move to the States to join up with Beckham in the Major League Soccer.

He is certainly quality, if he can stay fit (and he looks fitter than at any other time during his Villa stay) he must surely be worth another season, he gives another option and must have vast experience that he can pass on to the youngsters?

Wonder if there are any 25-year-old versions of him out there that we could buy!

A quick update on this article, the official site have just posted an article saying that Martin O’Neill will enter into talks with Patrik Berger after seeing the midfielder take on a new lease of life.

The 33-year-old can leave on a free in the summer but O’Neill said:

“I will certainly be speaking to him. This is as fit as he has been now for a couple of seasons. It is interesting to look at where he has come from – from not playing for the reserves. I do not have time here to be holding any grudges with people. And I’ve no time to be sentimental either. He laboured here last year, didn’t he? He was never fit and I am sure he was thinking of packing in. This is the best it has been – and yet he hasn’t started a league game for us.”
