“Better Than John McGinn” – Pundit Has A Bizarre Opinion On Reported Transfer Target

|

One of the more regular stories on Aston Villa’s transfer rumour mill this summer has been links with Leeds United’s defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

The 23-year-old had a very good campaign for manager Marcelo Bielsa, making 46 appearances in total across their campaign, and he even filled in at centre-half on numerous occasions. The links with Villa I’ve always thought were pretty obvious once the potential futures of Mile Jedinak and Glenn Whelan came into doubt as he’d slot right in to protect the back four, and fulfil that role but whether he’s a £20million player is open for debate.

In any event, with the speculation not going away this summer former fullback Danny Mills has had his say on the topic and although he agrees the player would be a good capture for head coach Dean Smith, he seems to be operating under the assumption that he’d replace John McGinn.

“He may well play instead of John McGinn, simple as that. It all becomes about competition for places, who can add what, who can do what in that team. The Premier League, as we’ve seen, is about competition for places. It’s about players earning the right and improving your squad. Is he better than John McGinn? I think he is, so I think he would go in and it might be him, Jack Grealish and somebody else in that midfield. It’s not just how does he play alongside him McGinn – Villa will be looking to improve their squad. Is he an improvement? Yes he is.”

Given I’d say that they were both completely different types of players, no, he wouldn’t be an improvement on McGinn because he doesn’t play McGinn’s game. He has different qualities that would make him an asset for us, but it would be the holding and protection role Whelan did for us in my mind.
