Kevin MacDonald spoke with the official site http://www.avfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10265~2128414,00.html? reporter Dan Harrison in Vienna following the 1-1 draw.
Big Mac (aka Albert apparently!) spoke of his pride at the young team and added it was a good education for the players to come to a ‘volatile’ place like that.
‘The intensity of the fans was tremendous from their point of view and to manage to play in patches the way they did try and play, I thought was outstanding – the young players and the senior players together.
He also pointed out the importance of scoring the away goal adding ‘I think some of the play early on, especially from Stephen Warnock and Stewart Downing, to then switch the play to Marc Albrighton was outstanding.’
And despite a weakened team being played, partly down to a catalogue of injuries and knocks, he said of the youngsters: ‘There is a very, very strong camaraderie among that group of players. How far they will all go depends on a little bit of luck and also the application that they put in over the next few years.’
Finishing… ‘It is not an easy place to come and it was a decent result for us.’
The club will await results on Andreas Weimann who picked up an ankle injury. The hope is that it is ligament damage not a break.
