New signing Birkir Bjarnason has been speaking about his hopes for the new chapter in his footballing career at Aston Villa.

With the 28 year old penning a three and a half year deal the other day after a fee was agreed with FC Basel in midweek, the player knows that Icelandic stars generally tend to do well in the English game and he was looking forward to being the next one off the production line.

Speaking to the Official Site to give his first proper interview since arriving at the club, versatile ‘Thor’ who can operate across the midfield positions said that he knew enough about Aston Villa to make the move and he didn’t have to speak to any of his international colleagues who ply their trade in England to get a heads up.

With the likes of Eidur Gudjohnsen, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Heider Helguson more than making a name for themselves in this country there are others such as Jon Dadi Bodvarsson at Wolves and Aron Gunnarsson at Cardiff City that he knows well from international duty so he hopes the Championship and then the Premier League won’t be a shock to him.

‘To be honest I haven`t spoken to the players who are based in England but, of course, some of them have been here for a long time and almost everybody has been successful here so hopefully I can be like them. In Iceland and in Norway where I grew up, English football is number one. It`s really big.’

He went on to say.

‘Like everyone else growing up, I wanted to play in the Premier League and play in England. This is going to be a really good opportunity for me to accomplish that. I’ve talked to the people at the club and the manager. They have great ambitions. I have as well. I want to go up. We will do our best. We`re not so far from it. I`ve heard great things about Villa Park, the club and the fans. It`s really exciting. I`m really looking forward to it.’

Whilst most may not know the name, Bjarnason was one of their stars at the European Championships last summer and he scored their first goal at a major tournament in their group clash against eventual winners Portugal.

With the ‘Viking clap’ being a memorable memory from the competition and Bodvarsson bringing it to the Midlands over at the Molineux, Thor’s more than happy if we want to adopt it as well.

‘For me and for all the country, the Euros were big. I don`t think anyone expected us to do so well but we have a great group and the experience we got there was priceless. Of course, they are moments you will remember for the rest of your life. Will we see the Viking clap at Villa Park? We`ll see! I haven`t thought about that but we`ll see what the supporters want.’
