Wilfred Bouma has the blessing of Martin O’Neill to talk to other clubs with his contract ending in the summer.

Speaking to the Official Site today Martin O’Neill wished Freddy the best for the future and praised his attitude in and around the club.

‘Freddie epitomises the kind of qualities we associate with top Dutch players, I have the utmost regard for him and he has been a totally positive influence at the club.’

O’Neill explains that Bouma has fought back from his injury, and the subsequent toe injury valiantly and he fully understands why he would want the move to secure first team football again while he still has the chance to.

‘He really wants to get back to the level of which he is undoubtedly still capable, so he wants to take this opportunity to do that and I wish him only the best.’

Makes perfect sense really both for the club and the player, although it would’ve been fantastic to see Boum Boum back in a claret and blue shirt – even if only the once – following his horrific ankle injury against Odense.

Like Martin, I wish him the best.
