At a bit of what I first wondered?

Speaking on the official site, Martin O’Neill has explained that Wilfred Bouma is desperate to get back into the first team, and although he’s still a fair way off that, it’ll be like having a new signing at his disposal when he does achieve it.

For all intents and purposes the Chelsea reserve match went better than expected, but there’s the obvious physical fitness and match sharpness that needs to return before he can be risked in a competative first team match.

‘Wilfred is chomping at the bit – he is ready to go.

‘That reserve game has helped him but he still has a bit of work to do physically.

‘We worked him in one v ones, two v twos and three v threes out in the training camp. He is certainly enjoying it and raring to go again.

‘It won’t happen overnight because he still has some work to do. But again, when he does return, it will genuinely feel like a new signing.’

Will Shorey still out of favour and our Top 4 chances suffering due to the injury of Laursen and constant defensive reorganisation, if Freddy can slot back in and find the form we expect from him quickly, it will go a long way to providing some stability in our back four as we attempt a final push this season.
