Wayne Bridges loss could well be Gareth Barry’s gain as he looks to add to his eighth international caps.

The Chelsea left-back player has been forced to withdraw from the England squad with a thigh strain. Oh dear, poor Chelsea, with Ashley Cole also out injured (and could that have happened to a nicer man?) they’ve more defensive woes!

Still, with those two out of the way, surely Gareth Barry must now start?

Barry said earlier in the week ‘When you have been overlooked for so long and you’re waiting for your chance, it’s important you keep your head up and keep playing as well as you can at club level. That’s what I’ve tried to do.

‘I’m delighted for the fans as well. At every game they’re singing my name for England and that means a lot. The website have backed me, even the local press have called for me to play for England for a long time, so I’m thankful to everyone in the area – especially the fans.’

  • yes he has. How can that fool be picked ahead of our bazza who has a better left foot, better tackler, can dribble and go past people and is captain of his club. Absolute disgrace McLaren should be ashamed.

  • McClaren is a moron. I hope he gets knocked in the head by a stray ball and put out of existence. It’s situation like this that reinforce for me the truism “club over country”. If McClaren and the FA are too dumb to use Barry, then I hope they lose. It’ll serve them right.

  • And no doubt Gareth will get thrown on for a token gesture 20-30 minutes at best. Its pathetic, but shouldn’t really come as a surprise to us.
