Manager Steve Bruce has held his normal Monday press conference, and spoken of his ‘quiet confidence’ at securing a real run for promotion next campaign.

With Play Off hopes – outside hopes at that – over in reality with the weekend’s draw to Burton Albion, we all knew it was an outside shot given how we started the season and the run in the New Year, but it does mean the team can continue gelling and hopefully ahead of next season, not only do we go into it in good spirits, confidence and with a winning mentality but also crucially actually playing some attractive stuff and having better control of matches as that continues to be a bone of contention for fans despite the recent winning run.

Speaking to the Official Site as he met with the media at the beginning of the week, Bruce explained.

‘I am always confident that I can put a team together that can get out of this division. I have done it before and it would be terrific to do it here. It`s never going to be easy because of who we are. We are the big scalp in this division. Everyone wants to turn us over. All the teams that come to Villa Park want to perform on the big stage and in the big arena. So all the bits and pieces make it difficult. But I am quietly confident that we will be able to mount a challenge and hopefully we will be good enough.’

Bruce went on to say that he knows his job first and foremost is to gain promotion in a timely fashion and then the job is the build the club back up from there in the top flight where hopefully we can return to competing in the top half of the table and then pushing on for the European spots to line up with Dr Tony Xia’s ambitions.

‘The one thing we need at a club like ours is to play in the big league. We will try our best. Whoever is sitting in the chair here at Aston Villa, we`ve got to mount a challenge. I`m under no illusion that we have to mount a challenge. That`s the way it is. If you`re managing Aston Villa, you`ve got to mount a challenge to get out of this division.’

  • Brucie is the one to lead back to the PL, no doubt. Given a summer to clear the decks and add that bit of quality, I’m sure we’ll be right up there this time next year. In Brucie we trust.
