Bruce says we need to get the basics right

A quote from the official site, off Bruce post-match:

‘We certainly need to get the basics right. And the basics are in a game of football to not make any mistakes. They keep costing us. In the last few weeks we’ve conceded twice every time and left ourselves needing to score three goals. That’s difficult to do in the Championship, so we need to get those basics right again. Hopefully then it will start to turn around’.

This is the level of analysis I’ve come to expect from Bruce, and makes me despair.

We need to stop making any mistakes, and let less goals in.

What’s he going to do?

Tell the players not to make any more mistakes?

Then they’ll say, ok Boss, and everything will be sorted.

We don’t close down the opposition all over the pitch when we don’t have the ball, and we are ponderous all over the pitch when we do have the ball.

These ARE the basics. Does Bruce not even recognise this?

Bruce needs to get his own managerial basics right too. Play players who are playing well, and just drop players who are continually making mistakes, or failing to deliver. We need more creativity and energy, starting from the back, or the likes of Grealish and Davis will always be asked to climb mountains and feed off scraps.

  • Bruce is clutching at straws , talking the talk but HIS team isn¬ít walking the walk, all the stats point to Villa being a upper mid table team at the best, every time we come up against a top team we get beaten or a draw , we should be at least 2nd with

  • I’d partly agree with him. You cant really expect howlers like Whelan at Derby or Jedi against Sheff Utd, probably even Whelan again against Brentford – but he needs to change something going forward. We just do not create enough clear cut chances, the pl

  • I agree, we do have to get the basics right, and that starts with Bruce. I’m sorry but if he persists with the same players making mistakes, week in, week out then it’s his fault. But will he give any of our talented youngsters a chance?…… of course

  • True garygaryshaw, but if you play players out of position, you do get more errors and if you bring in players a bit over the hill (no offense to them!) then …?

  • Been saying it for a while, he talks like a simpleton. You can only hope that’s his tv/press dumb downed answers and behind the scenes is some more detailed understanding and plan.

  • The way we play invites mistakes. We seem more than happy to concede possession and territory, so when we do inevitably give the ball, it’s always in dangerous areas. Or we concede from corners and set pieces which we have no need to give away if we were

  • well we sit today at ninth in the table,,, when the team needed to step up not only did it sit down but it also dug a big hole and hid in it expecting to emerge like spring flowers at the end of march
