Villa defender Gary Cahill has told the official site how happy he is that the reports linking him to a loan move to West Bromwich Albion were wide of the mark.

He told the official site: ‘I was away in Dubai when I heard about the West Brom story. One of my friends saw it on the internet and sent me a text message. Since then I’ve found out that it wasn’t true, so there was nothing in that. I would have been disappointed if there had been something in it for a simple reason – that I wanted to play football at the Villa. It’s nice if clubs are interested in you, because that is a compliment, but I don’t want to be swapped about and I was quite glad that none of this was true.’

The England U21 defender added, ‘I sort of expected it to be dismissed because I didn’t think the manager would do something like that. Knowing Martin O’Neill – not that I know him well – I think he would have come to the player first and he would have told me out of respect. It was just a strange shock, but I didn’t take any notice. I just enjoyed my holiday, came back and got me head down at Villa. I would be lying if I said I didn’t think ‘is it true or isn’t it true’, but you soon find out.’

He also says he is now fully focused on the new season and wants to add to last seasons 21 appearances for the first team.
