Villa defender Gary Cahill has told the official site how happy he is that the reports linking him to a loan move to West Bromwich Albion were wide of the mark.

He told the official site: ‘I was away in Dubai when I heard about the West Brom story. One of my friends saw it on the internet and sent me a text message. Since then I’ve found out that it wasn’t true, so there was nothing in that. I would have been disappointed if there had been something in it for a simple reason – that I wanted to play football at the Villa. It’s nice if clubs are interested in you, because that is a compliment, but I don’t want to be swapped about and I was quite glad that none of this was true.’

The England U21 defender added, ‘I sort of expected it to be dismissed because I didn’t think the manager would do something like that. Knowing Martin O’Neill – not that I know him well – I think he would have come to the player first and he would have told me out of respect. It was just a strange shock, but I didn’t take any notice. I just enjoyed my holiday, came back and got me head down at Villa. I would be lying if I said I didn’t think ‘is it true or isn’t it true’, but you soon find out.’

He also says he is now fully focused on the new season and wants to add to last seasons 21 appearances for the first team.

  • There is no doubt that Scott Sinclair is going to score a bucket load of goals next season, but I hope it isn’t at the expense of petr Halmosi. Playing Scott as either one of our many strikers, or on the right and letting David Norris play in the centre where he seems to prefer (and play even better!) could be the answer. That is as long as the paper is accurate! 😉

  • Agreed, still a bit naive but all the potential in the World and if we can let him learn from Laursen/Mellberg for another full season he will benefit and be a great player in my opinion.

  • Better than ridgewell in my opionin but we still need another CB for more comp and ship out Ridgewell he has potietial and would do tremedous for any newly prem club

  • Cahill is a fantastic naturally gifted defender. When you see the lad throw himself into danger it reminds me of John Terry, who lives to defend!…He is one with a very bright future.

  • moving norris in the centre would be the best option and having scotty and halmosi on the wings (if it happens)

  • the ollie factor will sway him i think..i agree, chuck down the middle and scott on the right please!

  • Without doubt he’s a tremendous prospect. I said 12 months ago that I liken him very much to Stephen Gerrard at the same age. Fast, strong, two good feet, good anticipation, thinks “attack”, whenever possible and always comfortable on the ball. Hopefully he’ll be another Villa legend unless he falls for “the love of the Lira” – but hope not!

  • Good, positive comments from young Gary, a player I fully expect to see holding down a regular starting place before the season is too long in the tooth.

  • Hopefully though we’ll soon sign the much needed right back we are supposedly after, because playing Gary in that position is doing him no particular favours.
