The latest reports are linking Gary Cahill with a loan move, the most recent has him off to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Martin O’Neill has said all along that he will consider loan moves for the younger or ‘fringe’ players in order to get them first team football.

He told the official site: ‘It wouldn’t surprise me that clubs were looking at us thinking because we’ve signed a player or two, someone might be available. It’s the usual suspects and I’ll monitor the situation for everyone’s concern. I’ll not make any promises because we haven’t got the biggest squad in the world, but by the same token, I wouldn’t mind some people getting some games. So I’ll monitor it and I’ll see.’

‘I’d prefer players going out and getting experience, especially if you’re playing intermittent reserve games.’

The Cahill link seems an obvious one, with Zat Knight and Curtis Davies now also competing for the central role, although I must admit I think Cahill is a super player and would hate to see him leave on anything other than a loan. The report I read was in the Express & Star and to be honest, had little substance and no quotes.

O’Neill said the reserve game against Fulham the other night was absolutely full of scouts, and we got the usual phone calls over the next day or two.’

I don’t think he meant the dib dib dib variety either!
