The latest reports are linking Gary Cahill with a loan move, the most recent has him off to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Martin O’Neill has said all along that he will consider loan moves for the younger or ‘fringe’ players in order to get them first team football.

He told the official site: ‘It wouldn’t surprise me that clubs were looking at us thinking because we’ve signed a player or two, someone might be available. It’s the usual suspects and I’ll monitor the situation for everyone’s concern. I’ll not make any promises because we haven’t got the biggest squad in the world, but by the same token, I wouldn’t mind some people getting some games. So I’ll monitor it and I’ll see.’

‘I’d prefer players going out and getting experience, especially if you’re playing intermittent reserve games.’

The Cahill link seems an obvious one, with Zat Knight and Curtis Davies now also competing for the central role, although I must admit I think Cahill is a super player and would hate to see him leave on anything other than a loan. The report I read was in the Express & Star and to be honest, had little substance and no quotes.

O’Neill said the reserve game against Fulham the other night was absolutely full of scouts, and we got the usual phone calls over the next day or two.’

I don’t think he meant the dib dib dib variety either!

  • A loan move is fine, but don’t get selling him MON. it’s better he plays first team footy, than playing in the reserves.

  • I would like to see him go out on loan and prove that he’s worthy of a 1st team place at Villa. I think he’s one of Englands brightest prospects at CB since John Terry cam through so selling him would be a major mistake!!

  • Enjoyed his time at Burnley and came back a better player. It’ll will be good if he went to a side who have a decent manager aiding his development. If he does go on loan then we should have the option of re-calling him at anytime. 3 centre backs aren’t enough with regards to cover….

  • Tough one to call, but no doubt Gary himself would rather be contributing to a cause elsewhere, as opposed to twiddling his thumbs sitting on the Villa Park bench, and occasionally turning out for the reserves in an attempt to keep somewhere near match fit.

  • We’ve got good cover now at CB if you count Laursen, Knight, Davies and Ollie (Gardner we know can fill at RB). So yes – let him go and further his experience. Would be emminently sensible to put a recall clause in though – agreed. The worry is that he forms a bond with the team he moves to – and for a local side like Wolves that could be a bit of a worry. If they get promoted, he’s enjoyed his time there, then maybe the thought of turning it into a permanent move enters his head. Wouldn’t be much of an ‘uproot’ in his life would it – moving from VP to the other side of the Midlands…. The receiving club always tends to fancy their chances of holding on to loan signings if they do well – look at us for example with Carson.

  • avfc48 – completely agree with you. I have also heard mixed noises also about Davies, so i’d be keen to see him sooner rather than later – when is he meant to be fit? Presumably given we did pay 10m for him we’re not going to be waiting too long to throw him in once he’s fit to play. I’m sure I read somewhere that he can also play at RB, so just wonder whether he may end up popping up on the right eventually?
