We all know that the next few weeks are likely to bring stories about the future of Gareth Barry and Martin Laursen. Just behind them will probably be John Carew if the last few weeks are anything to go by. However, the big Norwegian has said today that he is happy to stay, and that he is loving life at Villa Park.

The Birmingham Mail has featured an interview with him today.

“I don`t want to leave this club, I love being here, the fans, the players. I don`t see any reason why I would leave. I am enjoying my football and I`m happy to be contributing.”

I for one am delighted to hear this, although I am not surprised. He has cult-hero status and while he has had a ‘nomadic` past, he is now at an age where he is more than likely happy to be settled properly for the first time in probably his adult life.

From a fan point of view, I am very pleased. Knowing that Martin Laursen is likely to retire, Gareth Barry`s future remains uncertain and the slight nagging doubt that Stilyian Petrov hasn`t yet signed a new contract (although hopefully that will be sorted at the end of the season), it is pleasing to see that one of our more important commodities is happy to stay.

The Ajax incident seems a long time ago now and it certainly didn`t seem to dampen the support he has from the fans; if anything it helped his notoriety. From a pure football point of view, he is in good form at the moment and is joint top scorer on 13. Given the amount of football he missed, it makes you wonder if he would have been able to get closer to 20.

On his day he is unplayable. He has off days like everyone else does, but I would much rather have him in our team than the opposition. We haven`t had much to cheer about lately, but I suggest this should be greeted as something to smile about!

  • Think he has been lucky to get the chance to play himself back into favour and is certainly our most natural striker. As you say, on his day he is unstoppable, just hope he can now totally knuckle down, remain fit (big thing for a big guy like that) and I’m sure he’ll then have another season or two at Villa and continue to have the adoration the Holte end sends his way.

  • personally i think since he’s been back in the starting line-up his work rate has been an improvement, and seems to have more of a desire to get push against defenders.

I hate how refs seem to give everything against him though, he’ll win balls fairly, but because he used his strength it’ll get pulled back – nothing more annoying.

  • and i really love the way he loves the clubs and the fans, its genuine… unlike some other players that say it just for their ego sort of thing,

  • He is bigger than me and you! Legend who’s name will be sung whether with us or against us (hopefully with us).

  • I love being here, the fans, the players. I don`t see any reason why I would leave. I am enjoying my football and I`m happy to be contributing 50p in the pound to your pikey government in Income tax. Nothing to do with massive wages then?

  • “The big man has said that he has no desire to leave Villa Park. I’m sure that wont stop reports that he is off, but at least we all know the truth… ”

  • just diverting to transfer for a sec..ryan babel anyone. stats arent good. would he flourish with young and milner on the flanks providing quality service. didnt get much of a look in at liverpool. but i still think pogrebnyak.

  • has anyone else heard the sidwell rumour. heard he could be off. Carew will finish his career with avfc.

  • Not heard the Sidwell rumour, thought all a long that it wouldnt be till next season that we would see the best of him. On Carew delighted with his comments im happy with our forwards but would love 1 addition Owen or Bent.

  • in latest new arsenal want santa cruz ..wheres that put adebayor. + man u are apparently interested in benzema. no need for tevez. well if there looking for a club thats going to be in cl next season look no further. here we are. no need for bent or owen they can go to everton or bristol or wherever they belong. 442 australia magazines put owen as a dream marquee player for an a-league team. not too sure what hed think bout that.

  • Nice to see Big John showing us fans the support back when we cheer his name or he scores. He comes over on his own aswell, not neccesarily with other players.

  • Like the guy and on his day he’s immense but thats not often enough for me. I dont think he’s clinical enough to take us onto the next level. MON must have a £10m+ striker on his radar, its the only area he hasnt spent big money on yet.

  • Big fan of Big John, a beast in the box, don’t think he’s going anywhere and thankful for that.

  • Nothing to do with wages either Col, we have to face the fact that he could get his wages anywhere.
