Samir Carruthers is clearly quite a grounded player, having scored the final penalty against Portland he said ‘I take them everyday in training.’

Quite a fantastic attitude really, you’ve got a crowd dancing away, you’ve got some nutter with a chainsaw going on in the background, and Samir still had the stones to step up and finish in style.

May only have been a friendly, so the pressure wouldn’t have been the same, but the attitude is spot on.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail, the youngster said:

‘There was a bit of pressure to be honest with the last kick of the shoot out, but I take them every day in training. I’ve been in those positions before, some you score, some you don’t. Happily for me it went in and it ended up being the deciding penalty.’

As for the distractions, Carruthers admitted that Brad Guzan had given the squad the lowdown on the peculiarities of the Portland Timbers, but it was still strange hearing a chainsaw roaring in the background.

‘You always get distractions in the game. As I went up, before my run up I heard the chainsaw and I thought ‘what’s going on here?’ Every time you take a penalty you’ve just got to expect distractions really and block it out. That’s what I did and that’s what all five penalty takers for Villa did.’

Will certainly have been a good experience for the younger members of the team, and again, even though it was only a friendly, the pressure would’ve been on for the penalty takers, and they can take a lot of credit for keeping their composure and scoring so perfectly.
