Stoke City are lining up a move for James Chester, according to the Football Insider.

The website reports that a “well-placed source” has told them that the Potters are keen on our no.5, and are seeking to partner the Welsh international with Ryan Shawcross at the heart of their defence.

Chester is an integral part of the first team, and will likely be named as captain if he stays on next season.

However, much depends on the financial pressures at the club. Football Insider say we’ll have to sell if a sizeable offer comes in for the centre-back.

A report from the Daily Telegraph journalist John Percy seems to back that up with £50m said to be needed through player sales. The article also corroborates the report on Chester and believes a £10m offer from Gary Rowett’s side could be on the horizon.

The Birmingham Mail seems to have a slightly different take. They say Steve Bruce has been assured that he will be given enough money to compete, although on a more restrictive budget. That doesn’t mean though that players won’t be sold.
