Welsh international centre half James Chester has called on Aston Villa to return in peak condition next pre season so we can hit the ground running as we go for promotion back to the Premier League next season.

With a slow start to this year added to New Year troubles with results, Chester knows in hindsight that certainly cost us a real effort at promotion at the first time of asking, but with players having at least six months with each other now to bond, he’s looking for far more next season from the first kick off.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail as he looked to next term, he explained.

‘It`s been proven in this division that if you make a good start you are going to be there or thereabouts at the end of the season. We have spoken already about pre-season and keeping ourselves fit through the off-season. It is an awfully long time. It is important we come back in some shape to put in the hard work through July for the start of August.’

Promotion is of course the single aim for the season though and he expects it to be a good year.

‘Next season is one I am looking forward to and one I am fully expecting to be a successful one. The squad we have here should not be finishing 13th and 30-odd points behind the top two. What they have done only magnifies the disappointment of this season. This is an important summer for us. We need to make sure we are ready to hit the ground running next season.’

One thing that Chester thought would help us this summer was having a pre season with manager Steve Bruce so he can get exactly what he wants from the squad, but also a quieter transfer period given the number of players that have arrived in the last three four windows.

‘There have been players coming in and out non-stop. It is nice to have some stability now with the manager. He has signed players he wants here in January. I am not sure how much business will be done in the summer but we have a squad of players here now who seem to want to be here and do the right thing for the club.’

He ended by saying.

‘We had that at Hull when the manager was there. We had decent players but more importantly they were also good lads who were willing to put the work in and get good results. I see that happening here with the squad we have now. We are all hoping next season is successful.’
