Chris Sutton The Rigger

The rumour mill has virtually ground to a halt with the summer transfer window closing and the January one some way off, but the name Chris Sutton still keeps re-surfacing.

This could simply be the press putting two and two together and coming up with five however with Luke Moore looking like he could be out with shoulder problems and possible surgery for a fair while, it might make some sense to bring in an experienced striker like Sutton who is a free agent and could join immediately.

Chris Sutton has a wealth of experience but might well prove to be another Kevin Phillips where you can’t help but think if we’d got them five years before they’d have done us proud. Sutton formed part of the SAS with Alan Shearer at Blackburn Rovers and also enjoyed a spell with Martin O’Neill at Celtic. Apparently he went to some team in Small Heath last year as well, but I can’t say I’ve ever heard of them.

Raddy, from listman (quoted with his permission) said ‘Apparently Sutton not really an answer to out injury problems. This is from a work friend in Glasgow.’

‘Sutton was an excellent player for Celtic – Martin O’Neill knows how to get the best out him. The only thing with him is that you will be lucky to get 4 games in a row out of him as he is always getting slight knocks. We called him ‘The Rigger’ as he was on for two weeks then off for two – same as oil rig workers.’

I guess time will tell, Villa would end up very thin on the ground if another striker picked up a problem, but if they stay fit the choice of Gabriel Agbonlahor, Juan Pablo Angel and Milan Baros isn’t too shabby!
