Chris Sutton says he is still having to work hard to get match fit after playing for the reserves against West Ham this week.

The 33-year-old striker managed 74 minutes in our 3-2 win and said:

‘It was good. I enjoyed the game and obviously I’ve got to work hard to get my fitness up and push for a first-team place. I’ve been a long time out and it was the first time I’ve played in six months. It was good, but I did find it tough physically, which is why I only played 70-odd minutes. I trained last week, so I’ve got a little bit of a base and the more games I play, hopefully the stronger I’ll become.’

Adding: ‘I don’t know how close I am to a first-team call. That’s up to the manager. All I can do is train as hard as I can, do my best and hopefully it will come sooner rather than later. We’ve had a flying start, so this is a good place to be at the minute. I know a couple of the boys from Celtic, Didier and Stiliyan, and all the other boys have made me feel very welcome. So it’s been nice.’

He might be closer than he thinks with Juan Pablo Angel firing blanks and Luke Moore injured.

Good to see Sutton use the ‘we’ word, he has obviously washed away the memory of the Blues!
