Ciaran Clark has two reasons for confidence ahead of the West Ham game.
Speaking to the Official Site ahead of the game, Clark talked firstly about the boost in confidence our performance against Everton had given the camp:
‘We’ve shown we can do it against good teams, Everton, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City in the League Cup and even in the game against Manchester United, so we just need to back it up with results between now and the end of the season and we believe we can. On the training pitch we’ve been working hard and that will hopefully equate to greater consistency over the latter part of the season. The belief is there now more than ever.’
Clark focuses on the positives that can be taken from the game, and some of our performances and domination in recent games, but equally there is an eye on our errors, the sloppiness, and the fact we concede way more corners than we can afford to defend, but if we can clear up the errors, we can all hope can’t we.
The second boost for Clark was obviously his international debut goal against Poland and the words of Trappatoni who now seems to have accepted he’s not a left back (I didn’t watch the game, that might be a wild assumption).
Clark described his goal as one of the ‘best feeling I’ve ever had’ before the Republic manager spoke about his performance:
‘Clark is good. Last year he was not playing so much at Aston Villa but he’s strong, confident, can head the ball and he is a good passer of the ball. It’s not easy when there is pressure but I talked with the centre backs and I told them there are times when you don’t need to take the ball. You can wait because the striker must do something and Clark showed that he is getting more experienced.’
I think the latter part of those words are reference to how quickly Clark likes to take to the floor and invariably ends up booked. That is something he needs to learn as he picks up way too many, when the challenge wasn’t strictly required.
