Randy Lerner has released a statement with reference to rumours that he is selling his NFL team The Cleveland Browns…

Lerner`s statement:

“In connection with current rumors and press inquiries, I can report that I`ve been approached by Mr. Jimmy Haslam, who is interested in making an investment in the Cleveland Browns. We are currently in negotiations and both sides have agreed to keep that dialogue and its details private. Given that any transaction would require League approval, care has been taken so that this process will not be disruptive to the organization, in particular the football team, as it prepares for the upcoming season. We will share further details or make an announcement if it becomes necessary.”

Had a few press calls asking how I think that would impact Villa. Honest answer, no idea! If he is selling the NFL team and keeping Villa, I`d say positively, no idea how anyone can run two teams like he has, the stress must be immense.

Note the statement doesn`t say an acquisition, it says an investment. Until details are released, no one will know (obviously) so it will all just be conjecture.

More as it develops I`m sure.

  • I know a few of you know I live over here in Cleveland and my opinion, it’ll have no impact. The man’s already got a ton of money so that’s never been an issue. He’d likely attend more games due to an increase in free time. That’s probably all that would happen.

And, I know some of the Villa and Browns medical and training staff sometimes trade ideas and what not, example being when Dunne came over here for his shoulder last season cause it was more like an american football injury. That type of thing would probably stop. I don’t know how much else could change.

Interesting fact, the guy who approached Lerner is a long time Pittsburgh Steelers fan…so imagine how you’d feel if a very outspoken Bluenose swooped in and bought Villa. Sad, sad developments

  • Dunne decided not to go for help in the end in fact. So the difference would beeven more minimal. Randy isn’t as rich as you make out too. His investments have lost roughly 30% of all his money meaning he is no longer a billionaire, just a millionaire. That doesn’t leave much to sink into several sport franchise

  • This makes sense e all was worried about our charman running mutiple sports buisness so now hopefully this will help Villa in the long term as Randy stated recently he is here for and he can concentrate souley on Villa, we wont have hundreds of millions available but just that bit extra for players when needed UTV!

  • JWiLs, he’s not really a long-time Steelers fan… he just has been since he bought into the team. Before that he was a Colts fan (Manning) and before that a Cowboys fan.

RL really isn’t all that rich – and I’m not sure exactly how much, if at all, this helps the Villa… remember that RL does turn a profit on the Browns!
