Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness has spoken of is delight at seeing Birmingham named Great Britain’s candidate to host the 2022 Commonwealth games.

Having long supported the bid and worked with involved parties, it could see Villa Park host the Rugby 7s.

Speaking to the Official Site, Wyness explained.

‘We have already offered our support as the Commonwealth Games giant flag sailed across the Holte End prior to our 4-2 win over Norwich. We hosted the bid inspection team and told them personally of the Games experience some of our key management team have.’

With Brum winning out over Liverpool, we now have to beat off competition from Australia, Canada and Malaysia.

‘Villa Park truly is a jewel – a sporting palace – and we`re relishing the opportunity to host the Rugby 7s. We will be keeping a very close eye on the final result and keeping our fingers crossed for a positive outcome.’
