Controversial Late Penalty Spares Reading’s Blushes Against Villa

|

With plenty of positives to take from the Brentford performance, Aston Villa headed into today’s hosting of Reading at Villa Park with high hopes.

And it was again another solid performance from Steve Bruce’s boys as we dominated possession and chances on the day. After a goalless first half though, six minutes into the second period Ahmed Elmohamady gave us the advantage and it looked for a long time that our only failing in the game was in not being able to turn our comfort into a second goal.

Some things don’t change though and the failure to get a second saw us harshly punished by referee Darren England as he awarded a soft stoppage-time penalty to them, and Sam Baldock converted so we come out of the game having unfairly dropped two points.

Frustration will reign for a while as we undoubtedly deserved the win from the showing, but I think the positives will largely outweigh the negatives from this one.

Villa fans wanted improvement in performances and our attacking intent, and we are getting that in recent games, so hopefully, that will continue and we’ll kill teams off in the future – we do however remain unbeaten so far this season.
