According to red top, The Sun, Villa are in the chase for Chelsea’s Carlo Cudicini.

The 34-year-old Italian goalkeeper apparently has already told Chelsea that he wants to leave despite being under contract until the end of next season.

The Sun claim that his first choice would be a move to Villa with Manchester City also in the race.

The paper quotes a source ‘close’ to Cudicini as saying:

‘There will be another meeting with Chelsea to decide what is best for the club and Carlo. There is interest from Aston Villa as well as Manchester City.’

They also state that in the last four seasons he has only made 23 premiership appearances following the arrival of Petr Cech.

Surely 3 or 4 seasons to late and he wouldn’t come here as an understudy for someone else?

The paper say that O’Neill will look at Cudicini as he has decided against making Scott Carson’s loan move permanent with a £9million fee wanted.

Talking about Carson, former keeper legend Ray Clemence says that Carson will overcome his problems and be a top keeper.

On the official site the former England keeper said: ‘He is only 22 and, the younger you are, the more criticism hurts and he did take a lot for that game against Croatia when there were other people on the field that night who didn’t play that well either. Unfortunately he has taken the brunt of it since and I’ve been at a couple of grounds to watch Villa where the fans haven’t been the kindest to him. It is difficult at the moment for him but I know him, he is a strong character, he is young and he will bounce back and the ability will not leave him. I know that he will come back because he has great ability.’

Can’t say I’ve noticed that much abuse, have you?

Oh, and whilst we are talking about keepers, Martin O’Neill has slammed reports that he is after Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.
