Carlos Cuellar can’t wait for his full first team debut and after recovering from injury he’s been very impressive in reserve outings.

The Spanish centre half is feeling fine after 180 minutes of reserve action and feels he is close to giving Martin O’Neill a defensive selection headache.

Speaking on the official site, the summer signing said:

‘I am very happy because I am able to play now after recovering from the injury. I feel better and everything is looking good.

‘It’s been fantastic to get two wins in my two reserve games. And I’m obviously delighted that I’m fit and that I did well. I didn’t feel any problems.

‘I am getting closer to being available to the manager. Every day in training, I feel better and everything is moving in the right direction.

‘I feel great and I’m looking forward to the competition with Martin, Curtis and Zat for a first team spot.’

Cuellar doesn’t just want to challenge for a first team place, he’s looking forward to the atmosphere of a competative Premiership fixture.

‘Villa Park is a really great ground and the atmosphere, even in the reserve game, was fantastic.

‘I am looking forward to walking out for a first team match to see what that is like when it’s full.’

If Cuellar performs as well as his reputation and price tag suggests and as well as we’ve seen from the reserves, I certainly think he’ll taste a full on Villa Park atmosphere sooner rather than later.
