Hi all,

Fear asked me to post this, here and in Witton Lane. The horrible disease that is Leukaemia is something I have spent a fair part of the last 10 years getting to know. My wife helped get the local Cure Leukaemia charity off the ground and now works for them in helping find trust applications that the Charity can apply for. My uncle sadly passed away from Leukaemia just 5 years ago, so we’ve felt the tragedy personally too.

Have a read, and if you want to join in, contact the charity.

In February Vital Members were called upon to join our local leukaemia charity Cure Leukaemia (www.cureleukaemia.co.uk) for their launch of the Red Alert Appeal in conjunction with BBC Radio WM. The call was for people to go along to Victoria Square in Birmingham and dress up as a nurse in an attempt to break the world record – well, they were successful in their Guinness World Record Attempt and also launched their appeal which will fund haematology research nurses around the West Midlands.

These nurses are vital to the delivery of new drugs and treatments coming through which are not yet available on the NHS. They are sometimes the only hope for those patients suffering with leukaemia who have exhausted the standard treatment options. The charity has been going since 2004 and is starting to see the effects the funding of a Haematology Research Nurse can bring. In some circumstances patients are being offered the opportunity to trial drugs with better side effects, new drugs that are treating patients to the point of extending life expectancy and in a few circumstances have got patients through to the point of being able to be well enough to be able to go through transplant – which is the most effective ways to treat and survive the disease.

Cure Leukaemia is asking for Vital`s help again. On 27th May in Sutton Park they are holding a 5k fun run. You can walk, run, skip – whatever takes your fancy. They need 2,000 runners. It doesn`t cost much to enter and for the entry fee you get your medal, chocolate, water and a t shirt. Ideally they would love each runner to raise a minimum of £50 in sponsorship. From the event they will use the funds to recruit Haematology Research Nurses – the first one being placed at the Birmingham Children`s Hospital.
