And the transfer gossip for today?

Apparently, and the story is covered in various papers this morning, Villa have agreed a £9million fee for West Bromwich Albion defender Curtis Davies. Villa and the Baggies have been at loggerheads all through the summer for the WBA captain but if these reports are to be believed, Martin O’Neill has finally got his man and his second central defender in 24 hours following the arrival of Zat Knight. The reports say that the deal for Davies will begin with a one season loan.

Another report, this time in the Telegraph, has us in a fight for the signature of Spurs striker Jermain Defoe with Chelsea and Portsmouth.

You watch, all the talk of us, Pompey and Chelksi going for him, Manchester United will pop up and nick him from all three!

Pompey, it is claimed, will turn to the England striker if they can’t attract Nicolas Anelka to Fratton Park. Blimey, do I wish we were in for that sulky Frenchman or what?! He might be a pain but he is a pain who can score out of nothing! Villa are also apparently in the hunt for Defoe – a link that just won’t go away – as are Chelsea who it is believed are willing to throw in Shaun Wright-Phillips as part of the deal. If Shaun Wright Phillips is available…. oh sod it, you know what I’m going to say!

No matter who we are linked with, we’ve got to get a wriggle on, there is less than 48 hours to go in this transfer window and we still need two right-backs as well.

There has certainly been no rhyme or reason to this transfer window, I’m not sure we’ve really improved as yet and without much needed reinforcements, mid-table is surely the best we can expect from our stretched squad, especially judging by our lack of a 15-20 goal a season striker?

If they aren’t already, get your fingers crossed!

  • I also hear that Chelsea want Defoe and would be willing to let SWP go the other way as part of the deal. If this is true i cant see Villa getting a look in.

  • I have heard exactly the same about Defoe, Col. Chelsea can offer him a chance to earn £80k a week and sit on a bench or in the stands at Champion League matches, we can’t compete with that.

  • Chelski released a statement last night saying there is no swap deal for Defoe to counter press speculation.

  • Would defoe swap one bench for another is the question, is the reason he wants to move to become richer or to play football?

  • Is Defoe gonna get a shout in at Chelsea ? Who really wants to go to Portsmouth ? Is he really considering his options or are the press just plucking stories out of the air ? If Defoe wants to leave Spurs and play in Europe this season, then there is only one destination he will arrive at, Old Trafford, so please let this dream go. If he came to us I would be truly blown away, I’d be very happy don’t get me wrong, and these things happen from time to time, but why wind ourselves up with these silly rumours. Davis is more realistic, cover that we need and something for the future. A right back ? it’s gotta happen, surely it’s our absolute priority ? two more in before tomorrow ends ? lets hope for three and watch the clock tick away to 23:59:59……… and then get on with the season.

  • Rhyme & reason? I think there is – its called squad building to create a platform from which we can press on in the next stage. Clearly Mon did not rate Davis above Petrov/ Reo-Coker perhaps because Davis does not impost himself on a game (OK I know what you’re thinking) and Ridgewell did not want to fight for a place. So this Summer Mon has cleared the decks and gone for squad building, looking for players. Now he has an idea of what cash he has left after acquiring the first few, he can push on. Not sure why Curtis Davis would be a year loan though, that would take some explaining if true. Why tie up £9m resources in another club when we need the players ourselves. Davis can play rb can’t he?

  • And talking about sitting on benches, even for £80k a week…..thought we were having posh new dugouts….or did I dream it ?

  • I fear that Fear may be right. Fergie is known for his last minute nicking. Roy Keane came to Man U in the same fashion. 33.5 hours to go.

  • have to disagree voice, don’t think we have a single 20-goal-a-season striker. Gabby isn’t ready yet to lead the line, JC has yet to really dominate and impress and I think Defoe would provide the clinical finishing we are missing. Agree about Hughes, was madness to offload before replacing

  • Mellberg is a better RB than Hughes defensively and MON knows this. On the performances of this and last season, Gardner would keep Hughes out of the RB position anyway. Simple fact is Gardner is a better RB than Hughes and it is not his natural position. Hughes in my opinion was a very very weak link, and defending at times was awful.

  • More like a voice from the grave… what I can?t understand is why we are paying premium prices for average squad players yet we have flogged off our assets at cut prices. MON may not be able to comprehend the transfer market being so inflated but surely a successful moneyman in Randy must be lifting an eyebrow at such dealings. MON might not like the over inflated prices being quoted but we shouldn?t be ignoring that market force when selling our players. A disgrace in my opinion.

  • Ian Wright was on Talk Sport last night and he completely rubbished the reports. he said why would should leave as he has know broken in to the first team reckoning. SWP aint going anywhere.

  • Iheard it to Holt end star. Can you imagine wrighty watching SWP at white hart lane… unlikely. but what i do think is that Defoe will go to old trafford. they need a striker badly..
