Steve Davis, who signed a new 3.5 year contract at Villa this week, is hoping the club can now push on and get a European spot.

He told the official site: ‘We have got a few tough games but if we can pick up points up over Christmas, we will be in a good position going into the New Year. That’s the aim. We’ve had a few good results in the league over the last month apart from the Manchester United game and we want to continue that.’

Adding: ‘Everyone’s aim at the start of the season was to try and get into Europe. We had a disappointing start and is has been a matter of trying to get a bit of consistency and a run of results together. If you do that, you will climb the table quite quickly. If we can do that over Christmas then we will be looking good for the new year.’

He also points out that Villa have climbed the table impressively before. Villa are currently languishing in 15th with just 4 wins all season, but Davis doesn’t accept that it is too late to join the chasing European pack:

‘Two years ago we went from the bottom three just before Christmas and came joint fifth. The lads went on a great run. We are just trying to emulate that.’
