Dean Smith is able to recall Jed Steer from his temporary spell with Charlton Athletic. Birmingham Live have confirmed there is a recall clause in goalkeeper’s contract that allows the Villans to bring him back in January if necessary.

The 26-year-old has made nine League One appearances for the Addicks since joining on a season-long loan over the summer, but his long-term future is uncertain. Steer is out of contract at Villa Park next summer and it appears unlikely that the club will offer him an extension given his lack of playing time in the first-team.

Steer has made just nine appearances for the Midlands outfit since his 2013-arrival from Norwich City, spending more time out on loan than at Villa Park – 95 appearances in all competitions with four different clubs, conceding 128 goals and keeping 27 clean sheets.

He was initially retained for 12 months but has been forced to seek competitive playing time, leading to temporary moves to Doncaster Rovers (August 2014 – October 2014), Yeovil Town (October 2014 – February 2015), Huddersfield Town (September 2015 – December 2015) and Charlton (August 2018 – present).

If Smith has an issue with current first-choice Orjan Nyland and doesn’t want to turn to Mark Bunn or André Moreira, he has the option to bring Steer back. It’s unlikely the Villa manager turns to the outcast, however.
