Dean Smith believes Yannick Bolasie is ‘getting better and better’ after the Aston Villa winger made an instant impact from the bench against Derby County over the weekend. Bolasie created a goal just minutes after being introduced in Saturday’s 3-0 win at the iPro Stadium, running down the left wing and whipping in a ball for John McGinn to head home with aplomb.

The win was Villa’s second in as many weeks and saw them go within four points of the Championship playoffs, opening up an eight-point gap from the relegation zone. Prior to his loan move to Villa from Everton, Bolasie was struggling for fitness after suffering a long-term knee injury with the Toffees. Smith was mindful not to over-exert the winger but says Bolasie is doing well.

Smith said to the club’s official website: “He’s getting better and better. That comes with game time and match exposure. He’s put a superb ball in for the goal. He’s looked really bright and has shown us what he can do”. The DR Congo international joined Villa in August 2018 and has gone on to make 10 appearances in all competitions, scoring and creating three goals.

Bolasie has yet to hit the heights of his Crystal Palace days but his assist against Derby was certainly an indication that he’s improving. It’s potentially good news for Villa in their pursuit of a playoff place this season.
