David O’Leary has confirmed that Aston Villa will take up the one-year option on Mark Delaney’s contract.

The 29-year-old Welsh wizard (!) has formed a decent partnership with Olof Mellberg in recent weeks in the centre of defence having impressed enough to keep Liam Ridgewell out of the team. He has managed a 13 game run before picking up another unfortunate injury – this time his knee – which will keep him out for up to three weeks.

Luckily the latest injury set back hasn’t stopped the club following the managers wishes of offering the player a contract.

O’Leary told the official site: ‘We are going to take up the option. That’s been given to Mark this morning an it’s absolutely great news. It’s good news for everyone all round.’

  • Am I the only one who thinks MD will see this as a real slap in the face? He wanted a new contract to stop the uncertainty over his future. All this does is drag the uncertainty on for another year. Wouldnt suprise me if he handed in another transfer r

  • I think it works well for him as in another year he can leave on a free if he wants and earn a lot more

  • I guess with the club as it currently is no one really kows how things will develop in the next 6 months or so, I therefore see this as a deal to satisfy all parties.

  • It is a slap in the face DeanoVilla, and you can bet the guy is fuming about the whole affair. It’s not a new contract is it? All it is, is that the club has taken up the twelve month option on his existing deal, and its took them months to announce somet

  • There we go. Hate to say I told you so, but MD has bemonaed the deal as a farce. Well done on another shambles Villa!
