Great news for fans of Villa right-back as the Wales international is set to make a comeback.

Mark Delaney should feature in a behind closed door friendly against Wolves next Monday at Bodymoor Heath having finally getting back to training.

Delaney explained: ‘I’ve done a bit of training with the lads and thankfully there’s not been a reaction, although I was feeling a bit stiff. The manager is hoping I can play in the game with Wolves next week and it’s something for me to aim at. If I can manage to get through that unscathed it will be another step forward, another rung climbed on the ladder.’

‘In an ideal world being fit at this juncture of the season would be great because everyone is aware of how many games have to be played in a short space of time. The more people available, the better it is. But I don’t want to get carried away and start talking about the first team maybe being around the corner.’

Delaney returned at the same time last season and I don’t think it is any coincidence that we rallied and he helped halt the slide David O’Leary had us in. Trouble is with his full bodied tackles the Welshman soon picked up another injury and missed far too much time.

Delaney is out of contract in the summer and has been linked to Blackburn Rovers about 325 times!

With knocks to Olof Mellberg and Wilfred Bouma in tonight’s entertaining encounter with Sheffield United, the quicker Delaney is fit for a first team return the better. Jloyd Samuel might also now get a chance depending on the extent of the knocks to our defenders.
