Martin O’Neill has offered Didier Agathe a short term deal at Aston Villa after the Frenchman with the hope that the player will do enough to convince the Villa boss he is worthy of a long term deal.

We reported last week that Agathe has been training with Villa so O’Neill could take a look at the former Celtic player.

O’Neill told the official site: ‘I’m hoping Didier will take up a short-term contract offer we’ve given him. Obviously the Didier Agathe of a couple of seasons ago would be a great addition to the squad. He’s not had the greatest of times in recent months, but I’ve seen enough in the short time he’s been here with us. He played in the reserve game at Reading and, particularly in the second-half, he did enough to deserve this offer.’

Adding ‘If he can return to the form I know he’s capable of, I’m hoping that he might see this as an opportunity to secure a longer term deal here at Villa Park. I’ve seen a hunger to get back to his best and I’ll be absolutely delighted if he can get remotely close to it. He’s played at a high level. He’s played in the Champions’ League and was tremendous for Celtic in the Uefa Cup run a few seasons ago. So, if he can get back to his best, he has plenty to offer.’
