Gerard Houllier has said he was bitterly disappointed to leave the Stadium of Light today without even taking a point in the game given our performance and the chances we had.

It’s been a while since we had a game like that, we were (contrary to the stats) all over them for large parts of the game and there few chances came mainly from long distance efforts yet a mad 5 minute spell saw us capitulate all 3 points when on the balance of both halves we should’ve clearly been ahead.

Our failure to convert chances has once again bitten us squarely on the rectum.

Speaking on the Official Site following the 1-0 loss Gerard admitted we had nobody to blame but ourselves.

‘The first half was not up to our standards, we started well then suddenly it was not as good as we are supposed to be.

‘I am very disappointed with the result and we should as a reward got one goal and probably got a draw.’

Whilst admitting that morale dropped following the Dunneymonsters own goal, Houllier was pleased with how we stepped up a gear again in the second half and whereas we did play some good stuff, the lack of a clinical finisher sorely cost us.

‘We were quicker, sharper, better and created chance after chance but unfortunately didn’t manage to put the ball in the back of the net. This was the only regret because I was pleased with the effort of the players and their reaction.’

As for the injury to Petrov, the club are initially expecting him to be out for 2-3 weeks but will know for sure tomorrow when he returns from a scan.

Houllier added:

‘I think it is lateral knee ligaments.’
